SSL Certificate Types: The Differences Between DV, OV and EV
SSL certificates are identical in terms of encryption strength; the difference between them is how deeply the certificate authority (CA) verifies the applicant's identity. There are three main validation levels: DV, OV and EV. This article explains the differences and which one is enough for you.
DV — Domain Validation
This is the fastest and most common type. The CA only verifies that the domain is under your control, via a DNS record or file-based check. No company information is requested, it is issued in minutes, and it is usually free (like Let's Encrypt). For blogs, personal sites, small businesses, and most corporate sites it is completely sufficient in terms of the browser padlock and encryption.
OV — Organization Validation
In addition to the domain, the CA verifies that the applicant organization is real and registered (trade registry, phone confirmation, etc.). The organization name appears in the certificate details. It can take a few business days to issue and is paid. It is preferred for corporate sites and e-commerce that collect user data.
EV — Extended Validation
This is the most thorough validation level; the CA audits the organization's legal, physical, and operational existence through a rigorous process. It used to show a green company-name bar in browsers; modern browsers have largely removed that visual distinction. It is used where the highest perception of trust is sought, such as banks and large financial institutions; it is expensive and slow.
Which difference matters, and which doesn't?
- The encryption is the same. DV, OV and EV all provide the same TLS encryption; there is no "more secure connection" difference.
- The difference is at the trust/identity level. OV and EV present a verified organization identity in the certificate details.
- In terms of browser warnings all three are equal; all show the padlock, none trigger a "Not secure" warning.
Which one is enough for you?
For most sites DV is enough: it is free, issued in minutes, and provides the same encryption. OV/EV is only worth considering in special cases where you need your corporate identity to be visible in the certificate. 90 Day Free SSL issues a free DV certificate; you can verify your domain and create a certificate valid for 90 days right away.
Summary
DV, OV and EV share the same encryption; the difference is the depth of validation. For individuals and most corporate sites, free DV is enough. If all you need is a secure connection and the padlock, start with our free wizard.
