The difference between SSL and TLS

Technically, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the protocol's old name; the modern version used today is TLS (Transport Layer Security). The phrase "SSL certificate" is still used because it became widespread, but in reality all current connections are established with TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3. So in practice, an SSL certificate = a TLS certificate.

What exactly does SSL/TLS do?

A certificate provides three fundamental guarantees:

  • Encryption: The data becomes unreadable during transmission. Even if someone in the middle (e.g., on open Wi-Fi) captures the traffic, they can't decipher the content.
  • Integrity: If the data is altered along the way, the connection breaks; ads or malicious code can't be injected into the content.
  • Authentication: The certificate proves that the server you're connecting to really belongs to that domain.

How does the handshake work?

When the browser connects to the server, a very brief handshake takes place: the server presents its certificate, the browser verifies that it was signed by a trusted authority, and the two sides agree on a shared encryption key for the session. This entire process is completed in under a second.
